Becoming a Rescue Diver is more than learning emergency skills — it’s a shift in how you dive, think, and take responsibility for yourself and others.

Our PADI Rescue Diver + Emergency First Response (EFR) course on Koh Tao trains you to prevent problems before they happen, respond calmly in stressful situations, and support other divers both underwater and at the surface.

This combined course strengthens your confidence, awareness, and leadership while building essential first aid and rescue skills — making you a safer diver and a more responsible ocean user.

From Self-Awareness to Responsibility for Others

The Rescue Diver course is designed for certified divers who want to go beyond personal skill development and learn how to look after others.

At Black Turtle Conservation, we teach rescue training as awareness, prevention, and calm decision-making — not panic or shortcuts. You’ll learn how to recognize stress early, manage emergencies effectively, and act with confidence in real-world situations.

Your training begins with Emergency First Response (EFR) — First Aid and CPR on land — before progressing into diving-specific rescue skills and realistic scenarios in the ocean.

What you’ll learn:

  • Primary Care (CPR) and Secondary Care (First Aid)
  • How to assess emergency situations safely
  • Self-rescue techniques and stress management
  • How to assist tired or panicked divers
  • Search patterns and missing diver procedures
  • How to respond to unresponsive divers underwater and at the surface
  • Rescue breathing, towing, and exit techniques
  • Emergency oxygen and accident management

This course is ideal if you want to:

  • Become a safer, more confident diver
  • Learn to prevent problems before they escalate
  • Support others in emergency situations
  • Prepare for Divemaster or conservation leadership pathways

DAY 1 – EMERGENCY FIRST RESPONSE (EFR)

Your training begins on land with Emergency First Response — building confidence in First Aid and CPR before entering rescue diving scenarios.

You’ll learn how to recognize emergencies, prioritize care, and apply lifesaving skills through hands-on practice and role-playing.

EFR Training Includes:
  • Scene assessment and personal safety
  • CPR and rescue breathing
  • Bleeding, shock, and spinal injury management
  • Choking response (conscious & unconscious)
  • AED and emergency oxygen use
  • Injury and illness assessment

By the end of the day, you’ll be a certified Emergency First Responder (valid for 24 months).

DAY 2 – RESCUE FOUNDATIONS & SKILL DEVELOPMENT

You’ll move into the water to begin rescue-specific training, starting with self-rescue and progressively building toward assisting others.

Training Focus:
  • Self-rescue review
  • Establishing buoyancy and airway control
  • Assisting tired and panicked divers
  • Introduction to Rescue Exercises 1–10

Skills are first practiced in shallow water, with plenty of time to repeat and refine techniques calmly and safely.

DAY 3 – RESCUE SCENARIOS & ASSESSMENT

Once you’re comfortable with individual rescue skills, you’ll combine them into realistic rescue scenarios.

Rescue Scenarios Include:
  • Searching for a missing diver
  • Surfacing an unresponsive diver
  • In-water rescue breathing
  • Towing and exiting an unconscious diver
  • Managing the situation until help arrives

These scenarios bring everything together — awareness, teamwork, first aid, and decision-making.

After successful completion, you’ll be certified as a PADI Rescue Diver.

If your looking for low cost, high quality dive school to do your scuba open waters and/or more through, black turtle is the place to go. Ask around for an instructor named Naim and a soon-to-be instructor named Annie. They were great company and even better instructors. Strongly recommend.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the PADI Rescue Diver course and why is it important?

The PADI Rescue Diver course teaches you how to prevent diving accidents, recognize stress early, and respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations. It’s considered one of the most valuable courses in diver education because it changes how you think, dive, and support others underwater and at the surface.

What is Emergency First Response (EFR) and why is it included?

Emergency First Response (EFR) is a First Aid and CPR course that builds confidence in handling medical emergencies. It is a mandatory prerequisite for the PADI Rescue Diver course if you don’t already hold a valid First Aid & CPR certification. Including EFR ensures you are prepared both on land and in water.

Do I need to do EFR if I already have a First Aid and CPR certificate?

If you already hold a recognized First Aid and CPR certification that is valid within the last 24 months, you can start directly with the Rescue Diver course. Our team will help you confirm whether your certification meets the requirements.

How long does the Rescue Diver + EFR course take?

The combined program usually takes 3 to 4 days. EFR is completed in one day, followed by 2 to 3 days of Rescue Diver training, depending on your experience, comfort level, and progression during scenarios.

Is the Rescue Diver course difficult?

The Rescue Diver course is challenging, but in a positive and rewarding way. It focuses on problem-solving, awareness, and realistic scenarios rather than physical strength. Most divers describe it as the most demanding yet satisfying course they’ve ever completed.

What skills will I learn during the Rescue Diver course?

You’ll learn self-rescue techniques, assisting tired or panicked divers, underwater search patterns, surfacing unresponsive divers, rescue breathing, towing techniques, emergency oxygen use, and how to manage realistic rescue scenarios calmly and safely.

Is this course suitable if I’m interested in marine conservation?

Yes. Rescue training is a key foundation for conservation and scientific diving. It builds awareness, situational control, and leadership skills that are essential when working on surveys, research dives, or conservation projects in remote or challenging environments.

Do I need a lot of experience before starting Rescue Diver?

You need to be at least an Adventure Diver (or equivalent) and medically fit to dive. Recent diving experience is recommended. If you haven’t dived in a while, we may suggest a refresher to help you feel confident before starting.

What can I do after completing the Rescue Diver course?

After Rescue Diver, many divers continue with conservation programs such as the Ecological Monitoring Program (EMP), Core Conservationist, or Conservation Specialist. The course is also a required step toward Divemaster and professional dive pathways.

Why do the Rescue Diver course at Black Turtle Conservation?

At Black Turtle Conservation, rescue training is taught through awareness, prevention, and calm decision-making — not rushed drills. Small group sizes, experienced instructors, and a strong focus on responsible diving ensure high-quality, supportive, and realistic training aligned with conservation values.
