WEEK 5 – Advanced Ecosystem Research & Behavioral Ecology

This week marks the transition from applied restoration into true ecological research. Students move from following protocols to designing their own surveys, testing hypotheses, and interpreting complex biological interactions in real reef systems.

Day 29 – Giant Clam Ecology & Advanced Survey Design

Morning – Giant Clam Ecology (Black Turtle Dive Certification)

You will explore giant clams as ecosystem engineers of coral reefs.

You will learn:

  • Giant clam anatomy and species identification
  • Symbiosis with zooxanthellae and energy production
  • Filtration, nutrient cycling and reef productivity
  • Hunting, harvesting and conservation threats
  • Giant clam species found around Koh Tao
  • Survey techniques: transects, size classes, health scoring and photo ID

This module builds on EMP knowledge and takes it into species-level ecological research.

Afternoon – Giant Clam Dives

Two field sessions focused on real population assessment:

Dive 1 – Giant Clam Safari
  • Species recognition
  • Habitat preferences
  • Health and size estimation
Dive 2 – Giant Clam Survey Dive
  • Apply structured surveys
  • Students may also design and test their own survey formats
  • Record abundance, distribution and condition
Evening – Data Review & Discussion

This is where students move from trained conservation divers to independent field researchers.

WEEK 6 – Impact, Management & Conservation Leadership

This week moves students into the role of reef managers and conservation decision-makers.
You will no longer only collect data — you will learn how to interpret ecosystem shifts, evaluate threats, and decide when intervention is necessary.

Day 36 – Coral Predators, Reef Shifts & Population Control

Morning – Coral Predators Ecology & Management

You will explore coral predators not just as species — but as drivers of reef change.

You will learn:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is the Master Conservationist program designed for?

The Master Conservationist program is intended for divers with strong conservation foundations who aim to lead research and conservation initiatives. It is ideal for those interested in developing advanced ecological understanding, conducting impactful research, and contributing to scientific conservation strategies.

What certifications do I need before joining the Master Conservationist program?

Completion of both the 2-week Conservation Specialist and 2-week Reef Specialist programs (28 days) is required. These modules provide the essential ecological and practical foundations needed to successfully progress into expert-level conservation training.

Do I need to be an Advanced Open Water Diver?

Yes. You must be an Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent) and have completed the previous modules. This ensures you have sufficient diving and ecological experience to participate in research-level activities safely and effectively.

How is the Master Conservationist different from the other programs?

While previous programs focus on identification, monitoring techniques, and habitat studies, the Master Conservationist program advances into behavioral ecology, ecological engineering, high-level field research, and conservation leadership. You will also lead an expanded independent project using scientific diving methods.

Can I join the full 6-week package instead of booking modules separately?

Yes. We offer a 6-week discounted package (Conservation Specialist + Reef Specialist + Master Conservationist) for 88,000 THB when booked together. This is the most popular pathway among students seeking to build comprehensive conservation and research expertise.

What kind of independent project can I work on?

Projects may include research studies, educational resources, conservation strategies, or impact initiatives. Topics often explore predator abundance, cleaning station ecology, coral restoration success, or behavior-based ecosystem analysis. You will be guided by our instructors and supported by real research data.

Do I need scientific experience to enroll?

Not necessarily. You don’t need an academic science background, but you must have completed our previous programs and be comfortable with data collection, analysis, and underwater research methods. We provide all necessary tools and guidance.

Can I continue training after the Master Conservationist program?

Yes. You can extend your journey by adding +2 weeks of Scientific Diver, focusing on advanced survey methodology, data validation, and research dive protocols. This is recommended for those interested in academic research, technical conservation diving, or future instructor roles.

How can I apply and secure my place?

Spaces are limited to ensure high-quality mentorship and research support. You can apply via the booking form or contact our conservation team to discuss availability, start dates, and recommended progression paths. Early booking is strongly advised, especially for the 6-week package.

Why should I complete this program with Black Turtle Conservation?

Our programs are designed and led by active conservationists and scientists working directly in research and restoration projects on Koh Tao. You’ll train in small groups, participate in real data collection, and contribute to ongoing local projects, gaining practical experience beyond standard training courses.
