Artificial reefs are powerful tools for marine conservation and reef management. They can replace structure in damaged areas, expand existing reef systems, provide alternative dive sites and diver training aids, or even act as artistic installations that bring awareness to ocean protection.

But designing and building artificial reefs isn’t as simple as dropping structures in the ocean — it requires careful planning, environmental understanding, and scientific precision.

In this 1-day course, you’ll explore the theory, design, and ecological function behind artificial reefs, learning how to assess, plan, and evaluate reef installations while diving some of Koh Tao’s most successful projects.

Artificial reefs merge engineering, ecology, and creativity to restore and enrich marine environments. Whether designed to attract fish, support coral growth, or provide alternative dive sites, these structures can transform degraded areas into thriving ecosystems.

Our Artificial Reefs: Theory & Techniques course gives you the scientific and practical foundation to understand how artificial reefs function, how to design them responsibly, and how to evaluate their ecological success underwater.

What you’ll learn:

  • The different types and functions of artificial reefs — from coral restoration modules to diver training structures.
  • How materials, complexity, and shape influence marine colonization.
  • Environmental and logistical considerations in reef site selection.
  • How to assess structural design, stability, and ecological success through field observations
  • How to plan and present your own artificial reef project using the principles of design, sustainability, and ecological function.

This course is ideal if you want to:

  • Learn how artificial reefs contribute to coral reef restoration, fisheries enhancement, and sustainable tourism.
  • Participate in reef structure assessment and monitoring.
  • Build a solid foundation before joining advanced restoration or scientific diver programs.

WHY THIS COURSE MATTERS

Artificial reefs play a crucial role in both restoration and resilience. When natural reefs lose structure due to storms, bleaching, or human impacts, artificial reefs provide a physical foundation for new coral growth and marine life colonization.

These installations also help reduce pressure on natural reefs by offering alternative dive and training sites, ensuring that tourism and conservation can coexist sustainably.

At Black Turtle Conservation, our team integrates real research and monitoring into every course. You’ll not only study artificial reef theory — you’ll evaluate actual reef systems built and maintained under our conservation initiatives, like MOSES (Modular System for Ecological Structures), our flagship modular reef project used to test coral restoration methods and monitor biodiversity through photogrammetry and RUV (Remote Underwater Video).

By the end of the course, you’ll understand how artificial reefs can be designed and implemented ethically and effectively, creating long-term benefits for ecosystems and communities alike.

* Please note that the following schedule is indicative and may vary.
* Exact times for each session and dive will be confirmed before the course begins.

Morning — Theory Session:

Start your day learning the science and planning process behind artificial reefs.

Topics include:
  • The purpose and ecological functions of artificial reefs.
  • Common materials used in artificial reef construction — from metal and concrete to eco-friendly composites.
  • How structure, shape, and complexity affect biodiversity.
  • Environmental, safety, and permitting considerations for reef installation.
  • Case studies of successful projects in Koh Tao and across Thailand.

You’ll also learn how artificial reefs complement restoration work and how they can be integrated into conservation strategies to maximize ecosystem recovery and research value.

Afternoon — 2 Training Dives

Put theory into practice by visiting several artificial reef sites around Koh Tao.

Dive 1: Artificial Reef Structure Analysis

Observe the design, material, and stability of different artificial reefs while recording data on their ecological performance and colonization.

Dive 2: Ecological Assessment & Biodiversity Survey

Evaluate fish and coral recruitment patterns, identify ecological success indicators, and assess how structure complexity influences species diversity.

Each dive includes underwater observation, guided data collection, and discussion about the relationship between design choices and ecosystem outcomes.

By the end of the day, you’ll be able to evaluate artificial reefs scientifically and understand their potential to support restoration and sustainable marine tourism.

To conclude the course, you’ll apply everything you’ve learned by designing your own artificial reef project on paper. You’ll choose the objectives, materials, structure type, and site location, considering ecological, logistical, and safety aspects — just as you would for a real deployment. Each student presents their project, reinforcing their understanding of the full artificial reef planning process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Artificial Reefs: Theory & Techniques course about?

The Artificial Reefs: Theory & Techniques course is a 1-day marine conservation training in Koh Tao, Thailand, designed to teach divers how artificial reefs are planned, built, and monitored.

You’ll learn about reef design, materials, and ecological function, then dive to analyze real artificial reef structures around the island. The course blends theory, fieldwork, and project design to give you a full understanding of artificial reef development.

Do I need to be a certified diver to take the Artificial Reefs course?

Yes — this is a diving-based conservation course. You’ll need to be at least a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent) and have completed the Ecological Monitoring Program (EMP) and Coral Restoration: Theory & Techniques courses first.

These prerequisites ensure you already have the ecological background and underwater skills to assess and interpret artificial reef sites safely.

What will I learn in the Artificial Reefs course on Koh Tao?

You’ll learn how artificial reefs are designed and used for restoration, tourism management, and ecological enhancement. Topics include reef structure design, materials selection, site suitability, and monitoring techniques.

In the afternoon dives, you’ll visit local artificial reef projects — like MOSES, our modular reef system — to analyze complexity, stability, biodiversity, and colonization success.

Where does the Artificial Reefs course take place in Koh Tao?

The course takes place at several of Koh Tao’s established artificial reef sites, selected for their diversity, accessibility, and ecological value.

Students typically visit MOSES (Modular System for Ecological Structures) — located near Junkyard Reef — as well as BTD Reef, Aow Leuk, and Twins, where they can observe different stages of reef development and restoration success.

These sites provide the perfect setting to study how structure design, materials, and placement influence marine life colonization, coral recruitment, and overall ecosystem recovery.

Will I build or deploy an artificial reef during the course?

No — this course focuses on theory, design, and scientific evaluation, not on physical deployment.

However, as part of your training, you’ll create and present your own artificial reef project design, selecting objectives, materials, structure type, and location. This exercise helps you apply what you’ve learned in a realistic, research-based context.

What makes artificial reefs important for marine conservation?

Artificial reefs serve multiple conservation purposes — from restoring habitat in degraded areas to reducing diving pressure on natural reefs and supporting coral recruitment.

When designed responsibly, they enhance biodiversity, improve reef resilience, and promote sustainable ecotourism, making them a key tool in ocean restoration strategies.

What will I do during the dives in the Artificial Reefs course?

During the two afternoon dives, you’ll assess existing artificial reef structures underwater, observing their design, complexity, stability, and biological colonization.

You’ll record data, evaluate ecological performance, and discuss how different designs influence fish behavior, coral growth, and overall ecosystem health.

What certification will I receive after completing the Artificial Reefs course?

Upon completion, you’ll earn an official Conservation Diver Specialty Certification in Artificial Reefs: Theory & Techniques — recognized internationally by research organizations and marine conservation programs.

This certification qualifies you to participate in reef assessment and restoration projects at Conservation Diver centers worldwide.

How long is the Artificial Reefs course and what’s included?

The Artificial Reefs: Theory & Techniques course is a 1-day program that includes:

  • 1 classroom session on reef design, materials, and planning
  • 2 guided conservation dives
  • Artificial reef project design exercise and presentation
  • Diving equipment and insurance
  • Conservation Diver certification
  • Refreshments and fruit on the boat
