Coral reefs are living, dynamic ecosystems — and just like any organism, they can get sick.

In this 1-day course, you’ll learn to identify coral diseases and other signs of compromised health such as overgrowth, competition, and predation. You’ll practice advanced reef-survey techniques beyond the standard Ecological Monitoring Program (EMP) to assess coral health and contribute meaningful data to global monitoring initiatives.

Coral disease outbreaks are one of the greatest threats to tropical reefs. In Koh Tao, conditions like White Syndrome, Brown Band Disease, and Skeletal Eroding Band can spread quickly, especially after heatwaves or sedimentation events.

Our Coral Disease & Compromised Health Monitoring course trains you to recognize these patterns and understand the ecological and environmental drivers behind them — so you can help monitor, mitigate, and protect affected reefs.

What you’ll learn:

  • Identify coral diseases and stress indicators such as tissue loss, discoloration, or banding.
  • Recognize compromised health caused by algal overgrowth, predation by Drupella snails or Crown-of-Thorns starfish, and competitive interactions between corals and sponges.
  • Apply refined survey methods to record, map, and quantify disease prevalence.
  • Understand how temperature stress, nutrient loading, and pollution influence coral vulnerability.

This course is ideal if you want to:

  • Build advanced coral assessment skills to complement your EMP training.
  • Join long-term coral-health monitoring and reef-recovery research.
  • Deepen your understanding of how reef stress, competition, and resilience interact.

WHY THIS COURSE MATTERS

Understanding coral health is essential to effective reef management.

Diseases and stress responses don’t just harm individual colonies — they reshape entire ecosystems. On Koh Tao, coral diseases often follow thermal stress, sedimentation, or nutrient runoff, which weaken coral immune responses and promote pathogen growth.

By learning to distinguish between disease, predation, and natural recovery, you’ll gain the scientific insight needed to interpret real reef changes and support restoration efforts.

This course builds upon your EMP and Coral Taxonomy foundation, refining your observation and diagnostic skills to make you an essential contributor to reef-health research.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Coral Disease & Compromised Health Monitoring course in Koh Tao?

The Coral Disease & Compromised Health Monitoring course is an advanced marine conservation training offered by Black Turtle Conservation in Koh Tao, Thailand.

It teaches divers to identify and record coral diseases and other signs of compromised health such as overgrowth, predation, and competition between corals. Through theory and two hands-on dives, you’ll learn real monitoring techniques used by marine scientists.

Why is coral disease monitoring important for reef conservation?

Coral disease monitoring is essential to understand how reef ecosystems respond to stress. Diseases like White Syndrome, Brown Band Disease, and Skeletal Eroding Band can cause large-scale coral mortality.

By learning to identify these conditions, divers help detect early warning signs and contribute valuable data to conservation and restoration projects in Koh Tao and across Thailand.

What causes coral diseases in Koh Tao?

Coral diseases in Koh Tao are often triggered by thermal stress, poor water quality, and sedimentation. Human activities like overfishing, pollution, and coastal development also weaken coral immunity.

During this course, you’ll explore how these stressors lead to diseases and learn to distinguish natural bleaching from bacterial or fungal infections.

What will I learn during the Coral Disease & Compromised Health Monitoring course?

You’ll learn to identify coral diseases, record health indicators, and apply advanced monitoring techniques beyond the standard EMP.

You’ll also recognize signs of compromised health such as algal overgrowth, sponge competition, and coral predation, and learn how to collect and interpret data for ongoing reef-health research.

Where does the Coral Disease & Compromised Health course take place in Koh Tao?

This course takes place at selected reef sites around Koh Tao where coral diversity and health conditions vary naturally.

These sites provide ideal environments to observe and document diseases, algal overgrowth, and recovery processes — offering a real-world learning experience for every diver.

Do I need to be a certified diver to take the Coral Disease & Compromised Health course?

Yes. To join this course, you must be an Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent) and have completed both the Ecological Monitoring Program (EMP) and Coral Taxonomy & Identification courses.

These prerequisites ensure that you have the scientific diving and coral ID skills needed to conduct reliable monitoring underwater.

How does the Coral Disease & Compromised Health course relate to other marine conservation programs?

This course builds directly on the EMP and Coral Taxonomy courses and is an essential step before advanced research or restoration training.

Many students take it as part of the Scientific Diver program, where coral disease data contributes to long-term reef monitoring in Thailand.

What certification will I receive after completing the Coral Disease & Compromised Health course?

Upon completion, you’ll receive the Conservation Diver Coral Disease & Compromised Health Monitoring certification, recognized internationally among research and conservation organizations.

This certification acknowledges your ability to assess coral health scientifically and contribute to reef monitoring and restoration efforts worldwide.

Who teaches the Coral Disease & Compromised Health course in Koh Tao?

The course is taught by experienced marine biologists and Conservation Diver Instructor Trainers at Black Turtle Conservation.

All instructors are actively involved in coral research and restoration projects, ensuring that your learning experience is grounded in real, science-based conservation work.

Why take the Coral Disease & Compromised Health course with Black Turtle Conservation in Koh Tao?

Coral diseases are one of the most complex and least understood challenges in marine conservation — even scientists are still uncovering new causes and patterns every year. At Black Turtle Conservation, we make this advanced topic accessible and hands-on.

You’ll learn directly from marine biologists and conservationist who study these issues in the field, combining science and diving in a way that’s engaging, visual, and easy to grasp. Through guided dives and real case studies, we help you turn complex coral pathology into practical knowledge you can apply on every dive.
